How to Set Weight Loss Goals

When you are trying to lose weight, there will be many obstacles in your way. Fast food, dinners out at restaurants, or snack foods in the house can all have a way of doing in whatever motivation you may have in losing weight. Fortunately there is a way to set goals that can break through these temptations and keep you on track with what you are really going after. Let's get started.

The number 1 weapon in your arsenal is to have a strong desire. What is the reason why you want to lose weight and how good will it feel when you do? Feeling is a key word here as feelings are what really drive us in either direction, good or bad. Now that you have that feeling, allow yourself to enjoy it for a few moments.

Next, you have to get specific on what you are trying to achieve. Do you want to lose 10 pounds or twenty or more? You have to set a specific number down. Just saying to yourself, I want to lose weight is not enough. Write that number down in large print on a 3x5 index card. Carry that around you wherever you go. Look at it in the morning and at night. Look at it when you feel tempted.

Third, you have to take action. Are you going to exercise and cut down on unwanted junk food? Are you going to add a larger portion of high quality protein that's low in fat to your diet? Are you going to go out to the grocery store right now and purchase fresh fruit and vegetables to replace the unhealthy snacks and processed foods you've been eating? You have to have a specific action (or more, preferably) to take in order to make sure you succeed.

Now that you have these three steps in place, make sure you stay on track. Use that index card as a constant reminder. Keep yourself going. Get up and exercise when you can. Eat the right foods. And remember that desire that is driving you there. You can do it.

Problems:

  • Difficult to stick with long term
  • Excluding whole food groups is extremely dangerous and unhealthy.
  • If followed for an extended period could lead to malnutrition.
  • Very low cal diets do the opposite of what you want - they store up energy, and begin breaking down protein (muscle). Weight is gained quickly when you stop the diet because the body tries to replenish its energy stores.

Weight Loss - The Metabolic Syndrome - Effective Treatment With High-Protein Shakes

The metabolic syndrome is a cluster of the most dangerous heart attack risk factors including diabetes and pre-diabetes, abdominal obesity, high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

Here are some alarming facts:

  • One quarter of the world adult population has metabolic syndrome.
  • People with metabolic syndrome are twice as likely to die from it, and three times as likely to have a heart attack or stroke compared with people without the syndrome.
  • People with metabolic syndrome have a five times greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
  • Up to 80% of the 200 million people with diabetes globally will die of cardiovascular disease.
  • This puts the mortality rate of metabolic syndrome and diabetes miles ahead of HIV/AIDS and yet the problem is not as well recognized.

Early diagnosis by physicians is key to identifying those at risk and one of the primary treatments is weight loss. Researchers from the University of Ulm, Germany, have found that increased amounts of protein in the diet lead to greater improvement in metabolic syndrome risk factors when compared to consuming a standard level of protein.

The study, which was presented at the annual meeting of the Obesity Society in Phoenix, enrolled 110 overweight subjects with the metabolic syndrome who were randomly divided into two groups, and were followed for one year.

For the first three months, during the weight loss phase, those in the high protein group were instructed to follow a diet that supplied about twice the protein that would be obtained from a typical diet. They also replaced two meals a day with a high-protein meal replacement shake. The other group was instructed to eat a standard amount of protein from an all-food diet.

For the remaining nine months of the study - the weight maintenance phase - everyone used one meal replacement shake a day as part of their meal plan, and both groups maintained the level of protein intake in the diet they had consumed during the previous three months.

Everyone lost weight after a year, but the high protein group lost more weight (nearly 25 pounds, compared with about 14 pounds for the standard protein group). They also lost more body fat, and maintained lean body mass. More significant, however, was the finding that at the end of the study, 64 percent of those in the high protein group no longer met the criteria for the metabolic syndrome, compared with 41 percent who consumed the standard amount of protein.

Nearly 47 million Americans have the metabolic syndrome, and the numbers continue to grow along with the rise in obesity. Marion Flechtner-Mors, Ph.D., one of the researchers on the study and head of the Obesity Research Group at the University of Ulm, Germany, said "Effective interventions, such as the use of high protein meal replacements for weight loss, could improve the risk factors associated with the metabolic syndrome and affect the lives of millions of people".

Hunger-Suppressing Exercise

Now, ask yourself, how hungry were you after this jolt? Likely not that hungry at all. Compare this to an afternoon spent walking around the mall. So, you want to make sure your workouts don't leave you starving, do more high intensity short bursts rather than longer intensity sessions that leave you crying for food.

The Issue With Too Much Exercise and Weight Loss

Any way you slice it though, if you are performing too much exercise, you are risking overtraining yourself. This in itself often causes hunger to go through the roof, and what's more, is that women typically show higher hunger responses to exercise than their male counterparts.

So, if you're a female looking to lose weight, it's in your best interest to perform some weight loss exercise, but not too much. If you're spending too many hours each week exercising, you might just find yourself eating those calories right back afterwards - or who knows, potentially even eating more than you burned (thus actually causing you to gain weight).

So, do yourself a favor and keep your weight loss exercise levels under control. Some exercise is good; too much and you're in for problems.

Where is your belly going, where has it been? I know that opener probably sounds like the title of an old Joyce Carol Oats story, but I can't help but think about the obesity trends in the United States, and how many of us don't realize the trouble we're in.

The alarming trend hit me when I saw an interactive map at the Centers for Disease Control that tracked obesity as it increased across each of the states over the last 20 years. The dramatic increases can be seen in flashes from one state to the next until the majority of the country is covered with a reddish-orange hue, indicating that between 25-to-29 percent of adults have an Obese Body Mass Index-that's the measure of body fat based on height and weight.

What's really mind boggling about the growing obesity rate is that it's based entirely on the adult population. There are no adolescents on this map...not yet. And that's the real scary part, because you know kids everywhere have more sit-on-the-couch distractions than ever before. Reasons to Lose Weight?

People have many reasons for losing weight. For me it is a health problem. I have had heart surgery twice and I don't want to have it again. Others have health issues such as obesity, overweight, thyroid problems, diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma, coronary heart disease, diabetes and various forms of cancer.

Many just want to look better. They want to get rid of cellulite, have a beach body, fit into clothing, lose stomach fat (that's me), lose that big butt, etc. They just hate the way they look. Nobody wants a double chin, man boobs or stomach rolls. And mothers dislikes stretch marks.

Being overweight can affect relationships. Divorce can come because of an overweight partner (which should NEVER happen). A spouse can continually make the partner that not-so-special other. Contention builds up and misery sinks in. Sex drive may go the way of the wind. Dating may be restricted to the Internet. There can be great sorrow here.

There can me short-term reasons for losing weight. You may want to be able to get into clothing, that bikini, those shorts. Maybe you are going to be in a wedding party. Maybe you are the bride or groom, a bridesmaid, a best man. Maybe you made a resolution to lose weight.

And pregnancy brings on weight which a new mother wants to lose. She may want to keep her weight down during pregnancy so she won't have to lose so much weight later.

Being overweight can effect our personal life. Maybe we get sick too often, our back hurts, our thighs get chaffed or perhaps we have to stay away from the sport we love. Clothing becomes a more expensive issue as we need to go up a size or two. We may not be able to maintain hygiene like we use to and our feet waddle. And we are out of breath. Maybe obesity runs in your family which makes things even more challenging. It may keep you from obtaining employment (which is illegal), getting promoted or even be taken seriously. This can be a desperate state of affairs. You walk into a job interview and realize you are dead in the water.

What happens is that you lose your self confidence. You worry what others think. You are embarrassed in public. You may feel ugly. You have to stretch to get that seat belt around you in cars and planes. You hate walking up stairs in front of others and bathroom scales scare you to death.

The above are all good reasons to lose weight. Dieting can work. My wife has spent her life dieting, controlling what she eats and when she eats. She was very overweight after one of her pregnancies. She jogged, ruining her knees, was an instructor at Weight Watchers and got back into her wedding dress 20 years after our marriage. We have a picture to prove it.

There are medical procedures that are now helping those with very serious weight problems. I have talked to some of these people and they have been very happy about the outcome. But serious considerations must be given to any possible surgical outcomes. Some procedures are safer than other so you need discuss the possibilities with the doctor.

All of us must be kind to each other. Just doing that can remove the stress that is causing another to be overweight in the first place. "Henry yelled at me again! Where is that box of chocolates?"

    Calorie Shifting - What Is It Exactly?

    Calorie Shifting has become one of the hottest topics of debate in the weight loss industry. But what is Calorie Shifting and how does it work?

    Calorie Shifting was developed as a solution to the barrage of what I call "Low Something Diets". You know what I mean: every where you turn is another low this and low that diet. Once it's a low fat diet, another time it's low carb or even NO carb. There are diets which proclaim that they hold the solution to your weight problems because they are low calorie diets. You get the picture.

    For a while, some of these diets seemed to work. People reported an early fat loss at a good rate. It was what happened a few weeks or months down the line that was troubling: those same people who lost weight in the beginning, ended up gaining it all back and then some. It didn't happen to all of them, but the statistics state that 95% of diets fail and people end up fatter than they started.

    Wondering why this happened? The reason is simple: when you deprive your body of a certain food group like carbs or drastically cut down on the amount of calories you eat, your metabolism slows down. You see, your metabolism thinks you're starving, as if you were in the wild nature, and in order to make sure that your energy deposits last as long as possible, it slows down. It's a protective mechanism which is biologically active in all of us.

    The challenge was to create a system in which your metabolism will remain running high but in which you'll still lose fat fast. That's how Calorie Shifting came to be. Calorie Shifting is a way in which you constantly rotate your food thereby tricking your metabolism so it remains running high and burning a lot of fat.

    Calorie Shifting works by getting you to eat the right food at specific times of the day and then by roatating it so your metabolism never gets used to any routine. The good thing is that because your metabolism keeps on running high, you don't have to dperive your body of any food groups or eat an absurdly low amount of calories. Becuase your metabolism is high all the time, you don't gain all the weight back the moment you stop being on a diet.

    Weight Loss - Losing Stomach Fat

    1. Actually rub your stomach

    Yep, it's true. What you do is rub your hands together first, however. This causes the hands to acquire kinetic heat. This heat will easily go through the skin level and into the fat deposits where they help to destroy them. So after you're done rubbing your hands for 15 seconds or so, rub your belly with small circles and make the circles bigger and bigger. Do this rubbing for about 45 seconds.

    The best time to do these is right after a meal because this will help stimulate better digestion of the foods you just ate. Do this everyday and after as many meals as possible.

    2. Eat protein with each meal

    It's very simple. If you eat at least 20 grams of protein with each meal, you'll help to block out the effects of the carbs in the meal. So you won't have any blood sugar spikes that lead to weight gain. So if you absolutely must have a carb dominant meal, make sure protein is there as well.

    Healthy Holidays -7 Simple Weight Control Tips to Keep You As Jolly, Not Plump, As Santa This Season

    It all starts with Halloween and ends at the New Year--the dreaded holiday weight gain! First, there's Halloween candy--you buy it for the trick-or-treaters, but a lot of it ends up in your stomach long before October 31st arrives. Then, for the next 2 weeks, you see it on sale for 50% off and just CAN'T pass that up. You might even sneak some from your kids' goody bag (though you'd never admit to it).

    Three weeks later is Thanksgiving and the inevitable "feast." But the turkey isn't the only thing that loses its head and gets stuffed that day, is it? Then, the football games on TV after the meal virtually guarantee your body and digestion won't be moving much for the next few hours.

    By mid-December, the string of holiday parties, family gatherings, and social/cultural events rolls into full force and doesn't end until the clock strikes midnight on December 31st and you make your guilt-ridden, button-popping resolutions for the coming year (which are less likely to be achieved than Britney Spears winning Mother of the Year).

    Does this sound all too familiar? Are holidays your hardest time to stay focused on healthy eating? Are you convinced that "that's just the way it is" and it will always be that way? Well, here's a shocking revelation....

    Holiday weight gain is NOT inevitable! Here are 7 simple secrets you can employ that really can help you maintain--or even lose--weight through the holidays.

    1. Plan ahead.

    Don't pretend like you don't know what your challenges are--you've been through enough holidays in your life to remember where you've made poor choices. Before you go into each of those situations this time (e.g., a party), think ahead and what you'd like to do differently this time. Strategize new options and actions; make a commitment with yourself to follow through on the plan. Even if you don't do it perfectly, at least do it a little bit better; congratulate yourself on what you accomplished and build upon that success to do it even better the next time. Success breeds success.

    2. Don't eat like it's the Last Supper.

    You've had plenty of food on past holidays to remember for a lifetime, and you'll have plenty more holidays in the future, so don't eat your meal like it's the last you'll ever have. Although you may eat a little more volume or variety on that day, keep it reasonable so you don't roll yourself away from the table and have to pop some Tums or chug Mylanta. (Note: Chewing slowly helps extend the taste sensation while eating less than you would have because one bite will last you as long as 2 or 3 would have).

    3. Keep up exercise.

    Don't let the "excuse" of busy-ness prevent you from staying on your exercise routine--even if it is a modified routine. Twenty minutes is better than nothing, and YOU KNOW you can spare 20 minutes for yourself. Schedule your exercise time in your calendar as you do everything else. Increase your intensity if you have to decrease your time, so you'll burn more calories in that time. Do it in the morning, so you increase your energy for the day and don't have to worry about it later (plus, you'll burn as much fat in 20 minutes in the AM as 60 minutes later in the day). And remember, things like dancing count as exercise, as long as you are moving your body and getting your heart rate up, so get on that floor at every opportunity!

    4. Eat a healthy, balanced meal at home before you go to a holiday party.

    This is especially helpful for late-night events or if you don't know what's going to be served. This strategy will keep you from eating a meal that may not be an optimal choice. If the party is at someone's house, I would suggest you bring at least one item you feel you can enjoy without guilt and that others would enjoy as well. My momma always told me, "Don't be an empty-handed guest." Hmm....Now I can see other benefits to that as well. If it's a buffet-style dinner, go through the line to see what's available first, then decide what you're going to take to make your balanced plate and go through the line putting the appropriate amount on your plate. Remember--one starch only (pasta, bread, potatoes, corn, rice). Or skip the starch if you plan to have the dessert.

    5. Limit alcohol.

    This is liquid calories and sugar that people often don't "count" but can really add up. Remember that alcohol is a depressant and makes you less inhibited to say "no" to things like food, makes you forget about eating, or convinces you that you haven't eaten much. And even though you don't chew it, it's still a carb that turns to sugar, raises your blood sugar and, in turn, releases insulin, which increases fat-storage in the body and inhibits fat-burning.

    6. Drink more water.

    Winter can be dehydrating due to the heating of homes/buildings. I know MY skin and lips always get drier in winter. Drinking water also helps fill you up before your meal and can rehydrate you after a glass of beer or a cocktail. If you don't like drinking cold water when it's cold outside, drink it at room temperature or heat it up. Herbal tea (non-caffeinated and non-sweetened) counts as plain water, so bring some bags with you when you go out, drink at the office in place of coffee, and have at home to take the chill off.

    7. Remember, it's a holiDAY, not a holiMONTH.

    Most holidays are just celebrated on one day. Keep that in mind and focus on enjoying the "exceptions" of the one day (instead of a week or a month), then get back to your regular eating routine the next day (and send the leftovers home with guests--especially desserts).

    Use these simple tips to take the "gobble gobble" out of the season so you'll have less weight to lose once the new year comes around and you can focus on achieveing your weight loss goals more quickly.

    Weight Loss Surgery in Alabama

    Obesity -- the condition of being significantly above one's healthy weight -- is a health crisis in Alabama. Across our state, the number of overweight and obese individuals is rapidly increasing. In fact, almost 65% of the population of Alabama is overweight or obese. It is the second most common cause of preventable death in the United States, and may lead to life-threatening illnesses, called co-morbidities, such Type II diabetes, cancer, heart conditions, and hypertension.

The difficulty comes in restricting caloric intake - the primal urge to eat when hungry is almost irresistible.

    Many people who suffer from obesity also have disordered relationships with food, consuming food to quell uncomfortable emotions rather than for nutrition or the pleasure of eating. In fact, many among the obese in our state are food addicts, plagued by a constant desire to eat even when they are not hungry.

    Obesity is not a character flaw. It is a medical condition requiring medical treatment. Sadly, the pain and emotional trauma of obesity often leads those with the disease to attempt self-treatment. Many obese persons try to lose their excess weight by means of gimmicks, fad diets, exercise programs, or so-called weight-loss pills. These efforts lead some to lose significant weight, but most quickly regain it after they discontinue their weight loss program. Many people suffer damage to their health as a result of such quickie "cures".

    No miracle cure for obesity exists. The only way to successfully treat the disease of obesity is through medical care, based upon a complete change in the patient's lifestyle and eating habits. To beat obesity we must change the way Alabamans think about and relate to food, enabling us to eat better food and less of it.

    For most of us, education, counseling, support, and willpower are enough to accomplish this. For the rest, another option exists: weight loss surgery.

    Weight loss surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Most procedures are performed laparoscopically, though some may need to be performed through open surgery. The three main types of weight loss surgery are malabsorptive, restrictive, and combination, each with different risks and benefits. In each, however, the principle is the same: to surgically alter the patient's stomach and/or digestive tract in order to physically limit the amount of food the patient can eat at a given time. If successful, the surgical alterations will cause the patient to take in fewer calories each day than he or she burns, resulting in steady, safe weight loss.

    Weight loss surgery can be a true lifesaver. However, it is not a magic cure for obesity; only a complete change in the patient's lifestyle and relationship to food can cure the disease. Patients who fail to follow postoperative instructions may regain any weight lost or reach a weight-loss plateau over time.     Those considering bariatric surgery as an option for the management of obesity should carefully weigh the risks and possible outcomes of these procedures in consultation with their physician prior to making a decision.
