Reasons to Lose Weight?

People have many reasons for losing weight. For me it is a health problem. I have had heart surgery twice and I don't want to have it again. Others have health issues such as obesity, overweight, thyroid problems, diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma, coronary heart disease, diabetes and various forms of cancer.

Many just want to look better. They want to get rid of cellulite, have a beach body, fit into clothing, lose stomach fat (that's me), lose that big butt, etc. They just hate the way they look. Nobody wants a double chin, man boobs or stomach rolls. And mothers dislikes stretch marks.

Being overweight can affect relationships. Divorce can come because of an overweight partner (which should NEVER happen). A spouse can continually make the partner that not-so-special other. Contention builds up and misery sinks in. Sex drive may go the way of the wind. Dating may be restricted to the Internet. There can be great sorrow here.

There can me short-term reasons for losing weight. You may want to be able to get into clothing, that bikini, those shorts. Maybe you are going to be in a wedding party. Maybe you are the bride or groom, a bridesmaid, a best man. Maybe you made a resolution to lose weight.

And pregnancy brings on weight which a new mother wants to lose. She may want to keep her weight down during pregnancy so she won't have to lose so much weight later.

Being overweight can effect our personal life. Maybe we get sick too often, our back hurts, our thighs get chaffed or perhaps we have to stay away from the sport we love. Clothing becomes a more expensive issue as we need to go up a size or two. We may not be able to maintain hygiene like we use to and our feet waddle. And we are out of breath. We have a hard time getting dressed, we feel exhausted and we are spending way too much money on diet plans.

Maybe obesity runs in your family which makes things even more challenging. It may keep you from obtaining employment (which is illegal), getting promoted or even be taken seriously. This can be a desperate state of affairs. You walk into a job interview and realize you are dead in the water.

What happens is that you lose your self confidence. You worry what others think. You are embarrassed in public. You may feel ugly. You have to stretch to get that seat belt around you in cars and planes. You hate walking up stairs in front of others and bathroom scales scare you to death.

The above are all good reasons to lose weight. Dieting can work. My wife has spent her life dieting, controlling what she eats and when she eats. She was very overweight after one of her pregnancies. She jogged, ruining her knees, was an instructor at Weight Watchers and got back into her wedding dress 20 years after our marriage. We have a picture to prove it.

There are medical procedures that are now helping those with very serious weight problems. I have talked to some of these people and they have been very happy about the outcome. But serious considerations must be given to any possible surgical outcomes. Some procedures are safer than other so you need discuss the possibilities with the doctor.

All of us must be kind to each other. Just doing that can remove the stress that is causing another to be overweight in the first place. "Henry yelled at me again! Where is that box of chocolates?"

So, let's love one another.
