I know that as we get older our metabolism slows down so it is very important to stay active, unfortunately I am at a desk most of the day with very little time to go out for an hour walk. 3 Hoax Weight Loss Diets That Don't Work and Why

Problems:

  • Difficult to stick with long term
  • Excluding whole food groups is extremely dangerous and unhealthy.
  • If followed for an extended period could lead to malnutrition.
  • Very low cal diets do the opposite of what you want - they store up energy, and begin breaking down protein (muscle). Weight is gained quickly when you stop the diet because the body tries to replenish its energy stores.

Losing Weight Without Dieting!

Here's how to go about losing weight without dieting. Dieting is normally the best way to lose weight quick. However, it's usually the hardest on people... mentally. It's hard to give up your favorite foods or eat less. So I'm going to show you how to lose weight fast without going on a diet.

Losing Weight Without Dieting

1. Take supplements

Ok, at first that sounds boring. I'm not talking about diet pills or your typical weight loss supplements that give you a lot of hype, but little results. I'm talking about taking a supplement that isn't even considered a weight loss supplement. In fact, back before the 1950's, Americans regularly took this.

What is it?

It's coconut oil. In this case, it's extra virgin coconut oil. This is the pure kind that isn't refined to death like normal coconut oil. Be sure it has "extra virgin" or "cold pressed" on the label. If it doesn't say that, don't bother getting it.

When you do get it, take 1 tablespoon at a time... twice a day... on an empty stomach is best. Know this. Depending on your room temperature, it will either be in liquid or solid form. It solidifies at 77 degrees or lower.

2. Exercise

Again, duh. But wait. I'm going to give you a trick when it comes to walking. Maybe you already do walking or jogging. Ok, that's good. But this is better. Walking or jogging on an incline. Typically, the easiest way for you to do this would be to use a treadmill since you don't have to deal with cold or hot weather... or rain and snow.

Get on a treadmill that'll allow you to set it at an incline that is around 15-20 degrees. That's a slight incline, but it's more than sufficient to get great results. Then get to walking or jogging for 20-30 minutes.

The incline will increase the "hardness" of the exercise... thus increasing your weight loss results. An added trick is to do deep breathing continuously during your walk or jog. This brings added oxygen into your body. Oxygen is the nemesis of fat cells. Oxygen helps to oxide the fat and turn it into carbon dioxide.

Losing weight without dieting isn't too hard when you add these 2 tips into the equation.

Weight Loss and a Busy Schedule - How Do You Make Them Work Together?

I know what your thinking, "I never have time to think let alone make a plan to lose weight!" It's the common excuse of those that have tried and failed many times. This excuse is not valid in my opinion, as it won't be a difficult task if you make it a priority and work it into your schedule as an every day part of life. Here's how I mixed my weight loss with my extreme schedule and made it work.

The first thing I decided to do was write out my current eating schedule (or lack thereof) so that I knew what my current habits were like. I then wrote out how I would ideally like to set my eating and workout schedule up. After having the schedule I wanted written out on a piece of paper, I began looking for ways I could make it happen. For instance, I wanted to have 5 meals throughout the day, but 4 days out of the week I'm at work and pretty much am forced to adhere to my work schedule. So what I did was set up small portioned meals I could take with me to work and eat them on the breaks I was given. I knew that it would be a whole lot easier to follow a routine if I had it planned out beforehand.

With the eating planned out, I knew I still needed to find time to workout. Not only did I need to find time to workout, but I had to plan it within a 10 hour work day, which if anyone has worked them, they know how exhausting they can be. For my own personal benefit, I decided to plan my workouts before work as after working out my body is set up to burn more calories throughout the day. I also tend to be more energized which helps tremendously on those long work days.

If you have a very busy schedule, don't think you can't incorporate a healthy lifestyle into it. It may take some effort and some will power, but it IS possible. Just like anything else, the first week or two will feel different, but after a while it tends to feel like a normal day which is exactly how you want it to feel. Good Luck!

Weight Loss - The Metabolic Syndrome - Effective Treatment With High-Protein Shakes

The metabolic syndrome is a cluster of the most dangerous heart attack risk factors including diabetes and pre-diabetes, abdominal obesity, high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

Here are some alarming facts:

  • One quarter of the world adult population has metabolic syndrome.
  • People with metabolic syndrome are twice as likely to die from it, and three times as likely to have a heart attack or stroke compared with people without the syndrome.
  • People with metabolic syndrome have a five times greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
  • Up to 80% of the 200 million people with diabetes globally will die of cardiovascular disease.
  • This puts the mortality rate of metabolic syndrome and diabetes miles ahead of HIV/AIDS and yet the problem is not as well recognized.

Early diagnosis by physicians is key to identifying those at risk and one of the primary treatments is weight loss. Researchers from the University of Ulm, Germany, have found that increased amounts of protein in the diet lead to greater improvement in metabolic syndrome risk factors when compared to consuming a standard level of protein.

The study, which was presented at the annual meeting of the Obesity Society in Phoenix, enrolled 110 overweight subjects with the metabolic syndrome who were randomly divided into two groups, and were followed for one year.

For the first three months, during the weight loss phase, those in the high protein group were instructed to follow a diet that supplied about twice the protein that would be obtained from a typical diet. They also replaced two meals a day with a high-protein meal replacement shake. The other group was instructed to eat a standard amount of protein from an all-food diet.

For the remaining nine months of the study - the weight maintenance phase - everyone used one meal replacement shake a day as part of their meal plan, and both groups maintained the level of protein intake in the diet they had consumed during the previous three months.

Everyone lost weight after a year, but the high protein group lost more weight (nearly 25 pounds, compared with about 14 pounds for the standard protein group). They also lost more body fat, and maintained lean body mass. More significant, however, was the finding that at the end of the study, 64 percent of those in the high protein group no longer met the criteria for the metabolic syndrome, compared with 41 percent who consumed the standard amount of protein.

Nearly 47 million Americans have the metabolic syndrome, and the numbers continue to grow along with the rise in obesity. Marion Flechtner-Mors, Ph.D., one of the researchers on the study and head of the Obesity Research Group at the University of Ulm, Germany, said "Effective interventions, such as the use of high protein meal replacements for weight loss, could improve the risk factors associated with the metabolic syndrome and affect the lives of millions of people".

Mind Your Weight Through Weight Loss Hypnosis

Advocates of hypnotism claim that hypnosis cannot make a person do what he doesn't want to but it can modify a person's behavior. When under hypnosis, a person can be more receptive to suggestion. This is basically the principle behind weight loss hypnosis. Companies that offer such services and products claim that their merchandise aid in weight loss by conditioning the mind to suppress cravings for unhealthy food such as those rich in sugar, fat and sodium. It can also strengthen the motivation of a person to exercise and to sustain the will to adhere to the program.

Weight loss hypnosis is generally within the realms of weight loss programs. Some people strictly keep to a regular exercise regimen, others limit their calorie intake, still others take dietary supplements and others opt to take hypnosis as a recourse. As much as there are healthy and unhealthy means of losing weight, a person must be wary in choosing the right method. Healthy weight loss happens gradually over time, not in an instant. As with any program, will power is the ultimate deciding factor and the same can be said with a hypnosis regimen. When deciding to take this method as a recourse for losing the desired pounds, commitment is also a major determinant for the program's success. Hypnosis has been shown to aid in weight loss efforts but further researches are looking for conclusive scientific evidence on the influence of hypnotism on successful weight loss.

In another perspective, it simply encourages an individual to be self-motivated to eat and live healthily to lose weight and it requires cooperation and personal effort on the part of the individual. In any endeavor, one can hardly expect to be successful by magic. The same can be said with losing weight. As much as it sounds alluring, weight loss hypnosis certainly doesn't mean that you will lose weight with the snap of your fingers.

Part of the reason Oprah Winfrey is so popular is her down to earth and honest personality. She is very straight forward and tells it like it is; she is the real deal. As someone who has publically struggled with her weight, she has been the hero, the inspiration to many women (and men) who are in the same shoes. A Soda a Day: How is it Affecting Your Weight?

Many people limit themselves to one soda a day especially those looking for a quick sugar or caffeine boost. However, new research shows that daily soda may be affecting your weight more than you think. A recent study in the Journal of American Medical Association showed that women who drink soda or fruit punch every day gain weight quickly and face a significant risk of type II diabetes.

The study which analyzed more than 50,000 American nurses found that those who drank just one serving of soda or fruit punch a day tended to gain more weight than those who drank less than one a month. One serving is equivalent to one 12-ounce can of soda or one 8-ounce cup of fruit punch. The bottles of soda and fruit punches you find most often in vending machines are often 2-3 servings, which make these findings even more important since many people may be taking in more than one serving a day.

Over an average of four years, researchers found that the women who gained the most weight were those who increased their intake of regular sodas or fruit punch from one or fewer per week to one or more per day. Such women gained an average of 10.3 pounds, compared with an average of slightly less than three pounds for those who consumed one drink or less per week.

In addition, those who had one or more drinks containing sugar or corn syrup per day were 83 percent more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes than those who drank less than one such drink per month. It is also interesting to note that Type 2 Diabetes rose by 60% between 1990-2001.

The findings in this study suggest that there is something especially unhealthy about calories consumed in liquid form, said Caroline M. Apovian of the Boston University School of Medicine, who wrote an editorial accompanying the findings.

"It seems that when you drink your calories as opposed to eating them, your body may not sense that you've just taken in those calories and your appetite doesn't seem to compensate," Apovian said. "The appetite circuit might not be programmed to register liquid calories."

The take home lesson is use soda as a once in awhile treat but avoid drinking them every day for your health's sake.

Portion Control Helps Lucy Lose Weight

I was speaking to one of my clients the other day and she has progressed so far with the changes in her eating habits since we first met in September. I wanted to pass along some of the tips that have worked for her because she is losing weight and feeling great, so I thought these ideas would work for some of you!

1) The first change Lucy made was to use smaller plates in her home at dinner time. Many people have extremely large dinner plates that can easily measure nearly a foot in diameter. At the time I suggested she change to smaller plates, she hesitated and said to me, "but I only put food in the middle part--not all the way out to the edges". Then she realized how much plate was still being filled as she compared the size of her usual serving plates to the smaller 'salad' plates. "I'll try using these and see how it goes," Lucy agreed. And ever since then she has been having her dinner on the smaller plates, feeling satisfied and not stuffed.

2) The other trick Lucy tried for dinner meals was to reduce the amount of food she was cooking. "It's just me and my husband for dinner, but sometimes we cook enough for four or six people--then we just keep taking more helpings because the food is in front of us." Now she and her husband start with just enough food for two, and they both get just enough and never overeat at dinner. What a lot of calories she saves by eating for one!

3) When dining out, Lucy and her husband share a main entree with an additional order of a side salad. Or sometimes they'll each get an appetizer instead of a full meal. "They really give you so much food when you eat out, if you don't stay aware of how much you're putting away, it can be gone before you remember to ask for a take-out container!"

4) At the recent buffets Lucy has been going to around the holidays, she's come up with a couple of tips of her own that she shared with me: "Since I can't get a smaller plate wherever I go, I just leave more plate showing than I have covered!" What a great idea that is: Instead of saying to herself, "I'm at someone else's house now so I'll just fill up my plate like all the other guests," Lucy remains aware of eating reasonable portion sizes to help continue her weight loss and meet her goals. She makes sure there is plenty of space on the plate because that means it's not overflowing with food--translation, calories saved!

5) And the last tip she shared with me was another useful one when going through buffet lines: "I just take one spoonful of each item on the line--a spoonful of turkey, a spoonful of mashed potatoes, a spoonful of sweet potatoes, and so on. I'm not missing out on anything and it's plenty of food by the time I reach the end of the line. It's just so easy to take too much. Reminding myself to stick to one spoonful of each food works out just perfectly."

So, Lucy is finding ways to stick to reasonable portion sizes no matter where her busy life takes her--friends' houses, extended family's homes, or office parties. It's so great to see her able to come up with her own plans to keep on track with her healthy new way of eating. I'm sure you can too!

If your like most of us, it's around this time of year that we look in the mirror at ourselves in disgust. The pounds of fat we have been gathering over the last few years has finally caught up with us. If your ready to do something about it then keep reading.

Chinese herbs can be used to influence the bodys metabolism in different ways. Most people who need to lose weight would like to have their metabolism run more efficiently. These uses can leave a person ultimately more fatigued and adrenal-depleted in the end. Citrus Aurantium is an infinitely safer option for those interested in weight loss.

Other herbs that can help boost metabolic function are herbs that increase the qi and yang energy of the body. This class of herbs includes ginseng, astragalus, and atractylodes. Other herbs in this category include ginger, cinnamon, epimedium and eucommia bark. These herbs can also give a person an energy boost. This can encourage the person to remain consistent with his or her exercise routine. These herbs also encourage healthy digestion and generally make a persons metabolism run faster and more efficiently. This group of herbs can be particularly helpful for those people whose weight tends to accumulate around the abdomen.

Detoxifying, bitter herbs are another class of herbs that can assist with weight loss. These herbs tend to reduce inflammatory, acidic conditions in the body that often trigger the cravings people have for inordinate quantities of unhealthy food. These herbs are particularly useful in people who tend to have voracious appetites for spicy, oily, and sweet foods. It is important to remember that all of these supplements are beneficial for promoting weight loss because they promote a healthy metabolism, a healthy energy level, a healthy digestion, and a healthy mental attitude, but that dietary and lifestyle changes are crucial in order to see the results that you want.
